The appliance can handle hundreds of transactions per second at low latencies. Here are the performance test results showing an average 2.14 ms latency for 1000 requests per second with a single appliance instance:


The above test was performed on a machine with 4 vcpus and 8G RAM. By scaling out the number of appliance instances, your application can support even higher throughput.
Appliance vs standalone OPA
OPA can be run in HTTP server mode to service authorization requests. When compared to the appliance, its performance severely lags, especially for large input sizes. Here are the results achieved by the appliance where an input consists of 10000 JSON objects:
